All About Freelance Health and Medical Writing Jobs

medical clinics
Brian Scott asked:

If healthcare and medicine interest you, you’ll probably enjoy freelance health and medical writing. Even if you’re not versed in technical jargon, you can still find a place for yourself in the industry.

If you do have the technical background, you might be an excellent writer for pharmaceutical companies or an editor for medical journals. Otherwise, expect to find freelance jobs writing for magazines or websites about health, or in the health sections of newspapers.

Health and medical writers without backgrounds need to be excellent researchers. Look online or – better yet – go to a university library to update yourself on what’s going on in the medical world the public finds interesting. Has there been a recent vaccination controversy? Is there a new exercise trend on the horizon? Do energy bars really work? The answers to those questions appeal to people interested in health and wellness. If you can find the answers, you’ll have a sellable article.

Do I need experience to be a health or medical writer?

Do you need proof that you’ve written these types of articles for others? Yes, almost always.

Do you also need proof that you got paid for what you wrote as a health or medical writer? Nope, absolutely not.

If you don’t have the “almighty portfolio,” never fear. Write a few health/wellness articles and send them to your community newsletter, those free city newspapers, hospitals, nursing homes, medical clinics, etc. You won’t get paid, but editors will likely publish good articles.

Medical and health writers demand experience because you’re working in a specialized area. However, two or three published articles are usually enough to get your first paid job. It’ll just keep getting easier from there.

How do I find these jobs?

Once you have a few writing samples, it’s time to start sending query letters. A query letter introduces you and your idea to an editor. Here are a few tips to write a compelling query letter:

1. Know your editors. Read their magazines so you get a good feel for what articles editors may be looking for.

2. Always introduce your idea before you introduce yourself. You can impress editors by original ideas, not by resumes. Editors won’t glance at those clips you painstakingly collected if the editor doesn’t like your idea.

3. Focus on why an editor should publish your article. Yes, you need to tell the editor what you plan to write about — your main goal is to sell the editor on the notion the magazine’s readership will find your article interesting.

You may also want to approach editors of online health and medical sites, such as everydayhealth.com, healthline.com, and wellness.com. Again, make sure the nature of your article matches the content they publish.

Finally, try looking for ads on websites. Online-writing-jobs.com usually has about a dozen ads for health or medical writers, as does Freelancewriting.com and a few other sites. Do a search for “freelance health writing” to see for yourself.

How much money can I make?

It all depends on whom you’re working for. Many magazines pay $100 to $300 for short, quality articles (they pay more if the article is longer). Websites usually pay less because they have plenty of writers trying to work for them. Editors may also pay you per word, between $0.20/word and $2.00/word and up, depending on your experience and the publication’s reputation.

How should I respond to an ad?

You’ve come across an ad that appeals to you – congratulations! Read the sample ad below to see if you can figure out the best way to respond:

Holistic Weekly Magazine is currently accepting articles on alternative health trends. $0.50 to $0.90 per word.

This ad doesn’t tell you a lot, but it does tell you enough. Before you respond, go get a copy of Holistic Weekly and read it cover to cover. Once you have a solid grasp on what the magazine is all about, you’re ready to pitch your article ideas.

This magazine seems to focus on alternative health, so you need to ask yourself whether your idea is relevant. Organic eating, “western medicine” scandals, and types of alternative health care might be ideas to get you started.

Remember: knowing your editor and your readership are important to get published.

Medical Office Assistants Programs are Now Available Online

medical clinics
Robert asked:

ssistants perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices and clinics of numerous health professionals running smoothly. Medical assistants should not be confused with Physician Assistants. Physician Assistants have expanded duties and actually examine, diagnose and treat patients under direct supervision of a physician. Duties vary from office to office and depends on office location, size and if a MA specializes or not. In small offices, most Medical Assistants handle both administrative and clinical duties and are considered “generalists.” Also, MA’s in small offices tend to report directly to a physician, health practitioner or office manager.

In medical group practices, most Medical Assistants tend to specialize in a particular area. Also, in large offices they may report to department administrators or other operations management. The job duties could vary by state. Most medical employers prefer graduates who graduated from an accredited medical assistant training program. Accredited Medical Assisting programs are offered in postsecondary vocational schools, junior colleges, online educational services and distance education schools.

Formal training is not mandatory but recommended. Many students are now studying online at programs such as the medical assistant program at www.medassistant.org offered by St. Augustine School of Medical Assistants. Some high schools now even offer courses covering those needed and with the volunteering in a health care setting may provide enough education to begin a career in medical assisting.

Onine classes offers a number of advantages over traditional campus based programs. The most relevant benefit involves the luxury of remaining in your home while studying and consequently avoiding the inconvenience of commuting to classes and adherence to rigid time schedules. Also, there is no waste of time or other resources in transport, commuting to a central location for each class. Other advantages of online classes include: the flexibility to study in any convenient location with an internet connection, quickly browse materials you have already mastered, and concentrate time and effort in areas containing new information. Study materials at a personal speed and intensity, without having to wait for slower pace of the average classroom. Onine classes offers also offer flexibility for those with irregular work schedules while providing accessibility for those with restricted mobility (e.g., handicapped, injured, elderly) and accessibility for those with family responsibilities (e.g., parents with young children at home).

Medical Assistants deal with the public on a daily basis and must be neat and well groomed. Their working conditions are in well-lighted and very clean environments. Most Medical Assistants work a 40-hour work week and depending on where employed, may work nights and weekends. Employment of medical assistants is expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations through the year 2014 as the health care industry expands because of technological advances in medicine and the growth and aging of the population. Increasing utilization of medical assistants in the rapidly growing health care industry will further stimulate job growth. In fact, medical assistant jobs are projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations over the 2004-2014 period.

Employment growth will be driven by the increase in the number of group practices, clinics, and other health care facilities that need a high proportion of support personnel, particularly the flexible medical assistant who can handle both administrative and clinical duties. Medical assistants work primarily in outpatient settings, a rapidly growing sector of the health care industry. In view of the preference of many health care employers for trained personnel, job prospects should be best for medical assistants with formal training or experience,

The earnings of Medical Assistants vary, depending on their experience, skill level, and location. Median annual earnings of medical assistants were $24,610 in May 2004. The middle 50 percent earned between $20,650 and $28,930. Schools like St. Augustine School of Medical Assistants are often an excellent place for students to being their training and career studies to become a medical assistant.

Retirement in Puerto Vallarta–afraid of Medical Care South of the Border?

medical clinics
Jim Scherrer asked:

Ten years ago, the fear of needing emergency medical or dental care while south of the border ranked close to the fear of running out of gas while crossing the railroad tracks; both had you calling for spiritual guidance!

In 1997, shortly after we moved to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, referred to as PV or Vallarta by the locals, a friend of ours elected to have a substantial amount of cosmetic surgery done here in PV. At that time, there were a number of small hospitals and clinics in town, however only two that she considered. One was of the 50´s vintage and the other more like the 60´s because it had window air-conditioners in the three patient rooms. My son, a surgical veterinarian in California, would have been reluctant to practice his specialty in the other hospitals and clinics!

The surgical procedure on our friend was satisfactory and although none of the nurses spoke English, the attention and care she received during recuperation were excellent. At that time, good medical care was difficult to find in Vallarta and if anyone needed major medical care, they would need to go to Guadalajara or fly to the States. In 1997 there were a number of dentists in PV, but they were pretty scary looking places, resembling those you saw in the 60´s, although a couple of them did have window air-conditioners. Ten years ago, if you had a broken arm, toothache, etc., you were best off flying back to the good old USA for care.

Now, ten years later, we have two huge, ultra modern, fully equipped hospitals and one smaller, yet still modern hospital in Vallarta. Of course, many of the small dilapidated hospitals still exist, but would not be considered by North Americans. The small AmeriMed Hospital is fully capable of handling most emergencies, conducting most testing, and is adequate for all but the most serious problems. Across the street from AmeriMed is the new San Javier Hospital which was built about five years ago. This ultra modern hospital is capable of handling just about every medical problem imaginable. They recently performed emergency open heart surgery on a cruise boat passenger. San Javier has an MRI machine, cardiac catheterization, angioresonance, neuroradiologic, mammographic, ecosonographic, etc. equipment. Of course the patient recovery rooms meet the highest standards, equipped with everything you would expect in a fine US hospital. The newest hospital is the Cornerstone Hospital which was built two years ago and meets the same standards as the new Cornerstone Hospitals in Texas. Cornerstone has the only Radiology Clinic in Western Mexico with state-of-the-art CAT scan and MRI equipment. It is the center for dialysis and lithotripsy as well as having emergency pediatric care, full cardiac services, an ophthalmology department, a 24 hour emergency room, an intensive care unit, an on-site pharmacy, recovery room, and beautiful, almost plush, patient rooms.

Between San Javier and Cornerstone, we are fully covered for any matter pertaining to orthopedics, trauma, nephrology, urology, anesthesiology, internal medicine, gastroenterology, obstetrics and gynecology, endocrinology, rheumatology, neurology, cardiology, general surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, hematology, dermatology, and just about anything that ails you.

These hospitals accept most all international insurance and the majority of the US veteran benefits. In fact, the veterans here indicate that they are receiving better care in PV than the overcrowded VA facilities in the US.

Virtually all the doctors and nurses in these hospitals speak English. Furthermore, the majority of the doctors have received part of their education in the States or Europe. There are two main differences between these hospitals and those in the States. They are price and service! Surgical procedures and hospital services are a third to a half of what they are in the States. The attention, care, and follow-up far exceed that in the US. The doctors and nurses really care and treat each patient as a friend. They seem to be more interested in treating and curing the patient than they are in collecting the money. Most doctors carry cell-phones and are available for consultation 24 hours a day.

Cosmetic and reconstructive surgery has become so popular in PV that many Americans and Canadians come here specifically for a nip and tuck. So many, that a major spa specializing in postoperative care is currently in the planning stage, allowing those in the market to come to Paradise for a week or two and return home looking ten years younger!

Today, there are a few exceptional dentists in Vallarta, each with state-of-the-art offices meeting US standards. Root canals, caps, crowns, and implants are done on a daily basis in beautiful, high-tech, and sterile offices. Again, they are all fluent in English and their prices are a third to a half of what they are in the States. For that reason, many North Americans are also coming here for new caps, crowns, and implants- maybe the same people that come for the cosmetic surgery!

We don’t look forward to needing any of the new medical clinics, state-of-the-art hospitals, or modern dental offices, however if and when the time comes, we’ll certainly not be afraid of medical care south of the border!

Cha Medical asked:

Medical Aromatherapy of BioBell

Even though aromatherapy oil products are popular these days, there are not so many people who know the application and the effect of aromatherapy properly.

For example, just because you use the aromatherapy oils when you feel bad, it does not mean you are getting better on the medical side.

Veterinary Medical Equipment – Unique Needs Addressed

medical clinics
Maynard Jensen asked:

People often wonder why it is as expensive as it is to have their animal treated at a veterinary clinic. After all, it is only an animal, so the vet doesn’t have to pay for malpractice insurance in the same way that a standard medical practitioner does. What people don’t often consider though is the actual expense of operating a veterinary clinic, which also includes the purchasing of veterinary medical equipment.

Specialized Medical Equipment

Take a look around your doctors office or an emergency room in a hospital. Everything that is there is specialized. In fact even the scale that is used for weighing people is an electronic scale that is capable of precise measurements and of accommodating people with physical difficulties.

Specialized Veterinary Medical Equipment

A veterinary clinic also has to have an expensive specialized scale. In fact, they have to have more then one of them for handling very small animals as well as the standard larger ones. Another thing to consider, is that unlike a standard medical clinic that is equipped to accommodate human patients a veterinary clinic has to handle a wide variety of species of pets.

Other Expenses to Consider

This means that all varieties and sized of veterinary medical equipment, such as respirators have to be purchased and kept on hand. Add to this expense the cost of maintaining facilities to keep a wide variety of animals over night.

The Costs of  Higher Education

Also, a doctor of veterinary medicine has to pay off the costs incurred while they were pursuing their higher education and education costs the same no matter what type of medicine a person is studying. In fact, did you know that it is more difficult to get into a veterinary school then it is to get accepted into a medical school?

Japanese Medical Services in Thailand

medical clinics
Gregory Smyth asked:

ensure that the Japanese patients, who have come here for treatment and those Japanese nationals working in Thailand, receive medical attention without any anxieties, particularly in regards to language issues and cultural gaps.

Thailand is a developing country, but in the late 1970’s faced a serious medical crisis, which lead to a drastic devaluation of its medical services. At about the same time, the need for treating expatriates were increasing in this Asian country.

The Thai government requested help form Japan in terms of advice on Medical Health and Safety. The Japanese government, in response, conducted a survey on health management of more than 20,000 Japanese residents employed in Japanese companies established in Thailand.

From these studies and questionnaire surveys, it was concluded that even though health management and safety was reasonably good in the capital Bangkok, in other parts of the country they were sub-standard in comparison with Japan.

Medical services including health insurance were not complying with the required standards. Worker’s chronic diseases and/or mental disorders were not taken seriously resulting in problems for either Japanese medical officers or medical officers pertaining to the circuit team. Surprisingly, they did not seek help from the Thai medical services. All these led to the establishment of the Japanese Medical Services in Thailand.

Japanese Medical Services (JMS) was first opened in 1977, addressing a demand for a service specialized for the Japanese expatriates. The idea behind the project was to deliver direct medical services to Japanese clients without the difficulty of using in-between translators, allowing patients and doctors to communicate directly in Japanese.

Several Thai doctors, who graduated from Japan universities, have since been part of the Japanese Medical Services in Thailand.

The Japanese Medical Services in Thailand was, in 1994, upgraded to status of a hospital clinic and the possibility of service was boosted in order to reflect this significant change. There are now a handsome number of full time and part time Thai doctors working at JMS Clinics across Thailand.

As most of the JMS doctors possess Japanese medical licenses and experience with working at hospitals in Japan, they can deliver not only medical treatment but also pinpoint care to Japanese patients as they can digest the requests from Japanese patients clearly. There are Japanese nurses for looking after the services for medical check up programs, such as handling out the check up results in Japanese – the Health Promotion Center gives access to Japanese expatriates the yearly medical check up everyday. Over 400 Japanese corporate companies with 4,800 expatriates have received the service of Japanese Medical Services in Thailand in 2006 alone.

Even though the medical staff at the Japanese Medical Services in Thailand can speak Japanese, the hospitals in Thailand has as well employed 16 Japanese interpreters who perform as coordinators among various other centers and clinics around the campus of hospitals in Thailand.

In addition, if their services are required, interpreters help the doctors and other employees of other hospitals. These interpreters also deliver the required help to doctors and nurses during in-patient stays.

10 Questions to Ask Before You Travel Abroad for Medical or Dental Treatment

medical clinics
Caelen King asked:

Being well informed is the cornerstone of being able to make a good decision. Before you travel abroad to visit a dentist, doctor or cosmetic surgeon you should satisfy yourself that you are 100% happy to be treated by this person at their facility. Here are ten questions that will help you become an informed patient.

What are your qualifications and specialisations?

You should take the time to check that your dentist, doctor or surgeon is fully qualified and currently registered to practice in their local country. To do this, contact the local medical or dental council. If you are receiving specialist treatments, look for a further qualification in that area of specialisation. For further peace of mind, check if the person in question has been licensed to practice in your own local country.

With my medical history, am I suitable for this procedure?

To minimise the risk of unnecessary complications, you should disclose any possible medical reasons that might make you unsuitable for treatment. That could be something as simple as being a smoker, which might disqualify you from receiving dental implants. Your prospective practitioner should be asking these questions anyway, but if they don’t you should volunteer the information and ask about the implications.

What are the normal treatment and recovery times recommended?

One commonly voiced concern amongst local dentists and doctors when talking about patients seeking treatment abroad is that they compress too much treatment into too short a space of time. If you are getting complicated treatment done abroad, ask your overseas clinic what their recommended time between treatments is, what their recommended recovery times are, and if they differ significantly from what is suggested at home, ask them why that is.

What happens if something goes wrong?

The biggest fear that people have when looking for treatment abroad is that something will go wrong, either while they are still abroad or, worse still, once they return home. You need to know before you travel what procedures the clinic has in place for dealing with everything from pulled stitches to post operative infections. In the worst case scenario, what will they do if the procedure fails completely? Do they offer guarantees, refunds, or free remedial treatment? If you have returned home before the problem arises, will they pay for you to return? Be satisfied that you can live with the answers they give.

What other options do I have?

Often times you will have heard of a procedure from a magazine or a television programme that seems like it might be something you’d be interested in having done. Even if you are suitable for the procedure, ask about alternatives. There may be a newer procedure, or a less risky procedure or a cheaper procedure that you would be even more interested in, but if you don’t ask you may never be offered them.

How much is it going to cost?

If you are travelling abroad without having received a pre-consultation at home, any prices you have been quoted are likely list prices for a given procedure. You need to ask if there are any extra costs that are likely to arise: x-rays, anaesthetic, prescriptions, etc. The last thing you want to have happen is to get to your clinic and find out that the treatment you thought was going to cost €3,000 is actually going to cost €5,000 when everything is included. It is not unreasonable if you do have a local pre-consultation to ask for a fixed price guarantee. You might also want to enquire about possible payment methods.

Where is the treatment going to take place?

You will want to know in advance what type of facility you are going to be treated in. Is it a small clinic located in an office building, is it a larger purpose built clinic, or is it a hospital? There are implications involved in each case, but you will need to be satisfied that you are happy to be treated in whichever facility your prospective doctor, dentist or surgeon is located in.

What is your success rate?

Some procedures, such as dental implants, have a failure rate that is measurable. You should ask how many times your practitioner has performed the specific treatment you are interested in, and what the long term success rate of his or her use of this treatment is.

Can I speak to some previous patients?

One of the best ways you can get honest answers about treatment in a specific clinic is to talk to someone who has done it already. Ask the clinic to put you in touch with someone in your country who has had the same procedure performed. If they can’t or won’t, try and find someone yourself by searching online. People who are very happy or very unhappy often blog about the treatment they received.

What brand of implant do you use?

In order to accurately compare the price at home to the price abroad you really need to compare like with like, and that means asking what brand name of implant, crown, or veneer that the dentist is going to use is. The same applies for any cosmetic implants or fillers, and similarly there are a wide range of laser eye treatments available under the umbrella terms LASEK or LASIK. Know exactly what it is that you are buying or you might end up unhappy with the results.

Features for Purchase Prescription Medications via Internet

medical clinics
Antony Brown asked:

Americans spent in 2006 more than 100 billion dollars on purchasing goods via Internet. Purchasing online is convenient, easy and comfortable. Nowadays it’s possible to buy any prescription or generic drug, being at home or anywhere else where internet connection is available. There is no need to move out for a trip which can be difficult! All you have to do is – to go to the online drug store, select and buy the prescription drug you need, after filling the mail order pharmacy. It’s fast and easy! Here on the online drug store website, you can consult the full description of each prescription pills and select the drug of your needs. The online drug store is open 24 hours a day, you can order your medications at any convenient time. If a prescription is already issued to you, you can purchase at the online drug store recommended to you prescription medications or cheap generic drug, which are almost identical and bioequivalent in quality to branded pills. If you have no time to visit a physician and you are in emergency need of your medications, the online drug store’s physician will consult you for free of charges and select the best prescription drug or generic drug satisfying your needs.

Choosing the best online drugstore to purchase prescription medications safely

If you never before purchase prescription drug from this online drug store, please take the time to pay attention to its design. How its look like, what are your impressions? If an online drug store doesn’t look well – don’t purchase prescription medications there. Try to remember how long that drug store is operative. Review the sections “Contacts” and/or “About us”. There you should find detailed information about supplying medications. If you find only the feed back form instead of information about the company – do not trust such store. Such elements as indicated phone number, fax, juridical address, verify that drug store is a reputable company. Before starting to purchase prescription medications, you can call to the indicated phone number and make sure it’s right.

The proposed generic for you

If you order by the on-line drug store, for example generic viagra, don’t be surprised to receive medications with a different name. Generics are bioequivalent (made of the same active chemical elements) to branded pills, but have another name. Popular and known drugs are manufactured by pharmaceutical companies-inventors, and generic are manufactured by other companies, after patent terms are out. From a physician’s point of view, generic drugs are better than branded prescription medications, for their chemical composition and way of taking that maximally well studied. Generic drugs are more reliable and safe drugs. Accordingly, risks of eventual side effects are set up to the minimum for the manufacturer. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) controls the quality of all medications. Clinical generic tests or prescription medications must be registered at the FDA before allowing any manufacturer to start. Only approved pills can be on sale. The methods of control used by the FDA are very strict. Not more than 1/5 of drugs are approved.

Who manufactures generic drugs?

At first make sure who manufactures the prescription medications, you intend to purchase. For example, if the generic viagra, proposed by the online drug store, manufacture in India, it means that this generic has good quality. It’s known that India – is the largest and reliable manufacturer of generics. Large quantity of generics is made in India. Among them we can mention such drugs as drugs for depression, prescription diet pills, sleeping pills, blood pressure medication, birth control pills, pain medication, slimming pills, asthma medication, impotence medication, stop smoking medication, arthritis medication and many other pills.

How much high quality prescription drugs and generics cost?

Be aware of purchasing too cheap prescription drugs. Keep in mind the fact that no one will sell regardless of the profits! That’s why any reliable on-line drug store will never sell quality medication at the same prices with manufacturers that purchase pills. The most online pharmacies have the same prices for drugs. If you find a site where prices are considerably lower than usual – do not hurry to purchase. More probably, you will receive poor quality prescription medications and will loose your money. Draw attention when you purchase generic and not branded pills! Thus manufacturing and advertising generics are substantially less expensive than doing the same with branded pills, that’s why generics are always cheaper! A generic can cost 10, 20 or even 50 times lower than its equivalent branded drug. That’s why prices for one generic must be compared only to the prices for another generic, and to the ones for branded pills. If you find an online drug store generic at a quite lower price than on other stores – make the choice in favor of the usual, common price which justifies itself.

Discounts and actions for online drug store buyers

When you purchase a drug via Internet, you have to obtain discount, that you’ll not find on another drug store. Check out the drug store providing discounts! Some drugstores offer a lot of advantages for the customers. For example free shipping options for prescription medications and discount on further purchases. Such drug store deserves your attention. Indeed discounts will save some money even if pills are there a little costly than on the other stores.

Safety and privacy for prescription medication buyers

Extremely important to know that drug store guarantees the privacy of your data. Make sure of that by going through the section “Privacy Policy”. On poor sites, which don’t care about their visitors and their privacy, everything can happen, up to the disclosure of confidential information. It means that anyone can easily get your credit card data and illegally use it. That’s why you must be very careful before disclosing your personal data when you intend to purchase prescription drugs. Disclose your personal information exclusively on safe pages where you can see the protocol https on the address line and not the protocol http! If you’re invited to disclose your credit card data on a non secure page (page with the protocol http), please kindly refuse to purchase from that site. Keep in mind all our above advices than probably you’ll make the right choice of reputable drug store that able to satisfy your requirements.
